Galleries and museums are fundamental settings for the exploration of culture and education. But, why is it important that they embrace AR, VR and projection, and how can it be implemented?
A report by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), revealed DCMS-sponsored museums and galleries saw an overall decline in visitor numbers in 2016/17 compared to 2015/16. Many major institutions within this group contributed to this decline, including the National Portrait Gallery (down 11%), the National History Museum (down 14%) and the V&A (down 12%), amongst others.
Some may argue, that the key benefit of visiting a museum is that it takes people away from their TVs, tablets and smartphones – thus reducing ‘screen-time’. However, it’s a fact that many art galleries and museums are finding it tough to market to younger, digitally-oriented generations.
There is pressure for museums and art galleries to entice and engage wider audiences. We think the use of an immersive tech exhibition is a key way to achieve this.
Already, there are emerging examples of venues who have successfully incorporated this cutting-edge technology. And been rewarded by increased visitors and audience retention.
Museums have evolved and so have their visitors. The more forward-thinking cultural institutions recognise this and have been incorporating immersive tech into their venues. This has taken the form of installations to mobile apps, which include features such as Augmented Reality.
There are endless possibilities for the use of AR in museums. The first and most obvious way is to add additional information to pieces. This can be in form of video, 3D models, text or audio. AR gives an opportunity to add a third dimension to displays, bringing objects or scenes to life.
These projects bring something new to existing collections and attract wider audiences.
AR can allow for the gamification of traditional media – opening the door to a more exciting experience for children which compliments the adult’s.
Another example is Immersive Projection, which grants the ability to completely transform a space over and over again. It enables people to interact with the images, artefacts and information.
The museum experience no longer has to be a solitary moment. Immersive technology can open limitless opportunities for unexpected interactions that stay with visitors outside the four walls of the venue. Purposeful uses of this tech are further evolving into an integrated world of art and technology.
